Termites are a major hazard for property owners in Central Florida and all over the US. They are estimated to cause billions of dollars in damage every year, and in places like Central Florida with especially high humidity, the risk of a termite infestation is even higher.

If you’re dealing with a termite problem, professional termite treatments from Sorko Services are the best way to make sure your current infestation is dealt with – and to minimize the risk of future infestations.

What Attracts Termites?

The answer is simple: termites are attracted to wood. Here in Central Florida, subterranean termites are the most common type. These termites require moisture to survive, so properties with moist wood are at higher risk – but subterranean termites are perfectly content to build mud tubes from the ground to infest dry wood as well. If you see mud tubes on a structure, that’s a sure sign that termites are involved.

Termite Prevention

While you can’t completely prevent a termite infestation on your own, there are a few steps you can take to make your yard a bit less inviting to termites.

  • Fix plumbing leaks. These can leak water into the surrounding ground and are a very inviting water source for termites.
  • Clear yard debris promptly. After tree trimming or yard work, make sure you clean up after yourself. Yard debris can provide harborage for termites and other pests.
  • Minimize wood-to-soil contact. If you have a wooden structure, like a shed, on your property, consider surrounding it with sand instead of soil. Keep soil six feet away from structures at a minimum.

However, the most important thing you can do to protect your property from termites is to have regular professional inspections done. A professional can spot early warning signs of a termite problem. Catching the problem early is the best way to save yourself from extensive (and expensive) damage.

Does DIY Termite Control Work?

The short answer is no; DIY termite control methods, such as bait traps, are superficially effective at best. While you might be able to deal with a handful of termites on your own, it’s difficult or impossible to take care of the whole colony on your own. Professionals have all the right tools to deal with the root of the problem and make sure the termites are gone for good.

You might resort to DIY solutions in hopes of saving money, but it could actually cost you more in the long run than if you’d gone with a professional in the first place.
